They have released four studio albums, Time to Break the Spell (2006), Against the Grain (2009), Divide the Blackened Sky (2012), and an EP Life Support Part 1 (2013). Their fourth studio album, Decade, was released on January 29, 2016. The fifth and sixth, Decade II:Rock & Acoustic and Decade III:Demos & Rarities were released on August 31, 2018, followed by Quarantine Collaborations on December 17, 2021, and recently by the EP Manifestations. After the band received major record label attention, the album was re-issued in August 2011.[10] Against the Grain (2008-2010) Before releasing their debut album, they recorded and released a self-titled EP containing alternate versions of songs on their debut, and unreleased songs as well. The band released their debut album, Against the Grain, on April 21, 2009. Against the Grain has reached number 32 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers,[11] and its first single, Seasons, has reached number 10 on Billboard's Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart,[12] number 16 on the Rock Songs chart and number 30 on the Alternative Songs chart. "Seasons" was also the official theme song for WWE Backlash 2009, Pittsburgh Penguins Divide the Blackened Sky (2011-2012) Despite being dropped by Universal Records, the band decided to continue on without major record label support. Formed in 2007, the band's current lineup consists of singer Ariel Bloomer and lead guitarist Shawn Jump. They released two EPs independently before signing to Tooth & Nail Records, through which they released their first two albums: Scripted in 2011 and Icon for Hire on October 15, 2013. Their third album, You Can't Kill Us, was independently released on November 25, 2016. Their fourth album, Amorphous, was released on February 19, 2021, also independently. Their fifth independent studio album, The Reckoning, was released on September 30, 2022. Singer Ariel Bloomer performing in 2016 The band was formed in Decatur, Illinois by vocalist Ariel Bloomer and guitarist Shawn Jump. When the two met in 2007, Ariel, upon discovering that Jump played guitar, initiated a musical collaboration between the two of them. When the need for a drummer arose, Jump recruited Adam Kronshagen, an old friend he had held jam sessions with as a member of the local party scene (Jump was six months clean at the time).[1][2] The band officially formed in November of that year, after bassist Joshua Davis joined. They chose their name as a satirical comment on the state of the music industry.[3] The band played their first show in a local club before an audience of family and friends, who gave them a positive reception. Ariel has been quoted as saying of the performance, "Our passion for music was there; whatever we lacked in sound we made up for with enthusiasm." Over the next two years, the band toured throughout the Midwest and released two EPs, the self-titled Icon for Hire EP in 2008 and The Grey EP in 2009.[4] During that same year, Davis left the band. Johnston learned from an unofficial yet reliable dispatch that General Robert E. Lee surrendered the remnants of his army near Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Prior to this, the last shred of hope for an independent and the victorious Confederate States of America rested on Johnston uniting his army with Lee’s somewhere near the North Carolina-Virginia border. Lee’s surrender dashed these hopes. However, even after official confirmation from Confederate Secretary of War John C. Breckenridge on April 12, President Jefferson Davis remained unconvinced that Lee’s surrender was the fatal blow to the Confederacy and the war effort. Rather, Davis spouted these grand illusions of a raising a large, well-armed, well-fed field army comprised of recalled deserters and those who avoided conscription to continue the fight for Confederate independence. On April 13 during a military meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina, Johnston tried to dissuade Davis from his plan for renewed combat by arguing that the Union forces outnumbered the Confederates by eighteen to one, the Confederacy lacked the money, credit, and factories to purchase or produce more arms, and fighting would only further devastate the South without significantly harming the enemy. With the surrender at Appomattox, Johnston shifted his objective to procuring the best possible terms for surrender as he argued: “it would be the greatest of human crimes to continue the war.” Luckily for Johnston, Davis agreed to open communications with General William T. Sherman; however, Davis still believed that victory was achievable despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Johnston received Sherman’s reply on Easter Sunday morning and rode out to Greensboro to notify Davis; however, Davis had left without notifying Johnston—the two men never enjoyed a cordial relationship. An annoyed Johnston decided to engage in negotiations with Sherman without Davis’s authorization and suggested meeting on April 17, which Sherman agreed to.
